Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about accredited ISO certification bodies.
A certification body (also called a registrar or CB) is an accredited organisation that independently audits your management system and issues an ISO certificate. They are accredited by a national accreditation body such as UKAS, JASANZ, or ANAB.
Ensure the certification body is accredited by a recognised national accreditation body. Compare audit fees, availability, sector experience, and customer service. CertBetter lists verified, accredited certification bodies so you can compare and request quotes directly.
Stage 1 is a documentation review — the auditor checks that your management system is adequately designed and documented. Stage 2 is an on-site audit that verifies your system is fully implemented and operational. Both must be passed to receive certification.
Audit fees depend on business size, number of employees, sites, and standard. Expect $2,000–$8,000+ for a full initial certification (Stage 1 + Stage 2) for a small business. Annual surveillance audits and 3-year recertification audits are additional ongoing costs.
ISO certificates are typically valid for 3 years, subject to annual surveillance audits in years 1 and 2, and a full recertification audit in year 3. Failing a surveillance audit can result in suspension or withdrawal of the certificate.
